A student nearing graduation reached out to alumni for guidance on breaking into the museum and archives field, with dreams of one day working at the Walt Disney Archives. What followed was an almost immediate outpouring of support from the University of Mary Washington alumni community, with multiple graduates responding quickly and generously.
Alumni from across decades shared thoughtful advice, practical resources, and personal stories of navigating their own career paths. Some emphasized starting small with local archives or museums, others spoke about the importance of graduate study, and several encouraged the student to build digital and technical skills to stay competitive. One alum passed along insights from a former Disney archivist about how to get a foot in the door, while another offered to share job postings and personally assist with applications. Others extended invitations to meet over coffee or Zoom, underscoring that networking is at the heart of this field.
What stood out most was not only the depth of advice but also the speed and warmth of the responses. Within days, the student had a network of mentors offering encouragement, contacts, and tangible next steps. Alumni reminded her that relationships matter, and they demonstrated it by stepping up so quickly to guide someone following in their footsteps.
This exchange captures the strength of the UMW alumni community. It’s a reminder that higher education isn’t just about what happens in the classroom, but also about the lifelong network that rallies around students when they need it most. In this case, alumni turned uncertainty into possibility, showing the real power of connection and how a tight-knit community can help light the path forward.
I am STUDENT, a Historic Preservation major with a Museum Studies minor at the University of Mary Washington, graduating in 2025.
I am seeking advice on starting my job search in the museum field, particularly as I aspire to become an archivist at the Walt Disney Archives or another movie studio. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on where to begin my search and tips for navigating the job hunting process.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance.
Thank you so much for reaching out to me! It is really wonderful to connect with someone at Mary Washington in the Historic Preservation Department. I would be happy to schedule a zoom call with you so we can talk more about your career interests. My area of expertise is Academic Archives rather than a special archives such as a media company but I think some of the initial steps to enter the library/archives profession are similar regardless of the type of repository.
Let me know some options for dates/times and I will review my calendar.
With warm regards,
ALUM
Thank you so much for your advice. I definitely would love to do a Zoom call with you to discuss how to get into the archives. I will be available on August 21-22, September 1,2, and 3 from 9:00 am-12 pm if any of those times would work for you. Just let me know.
What’s special about the University of Mary Washington team is that they work with students to ensure each alum gets a “Thank You” from the Asker.
This student sent thoughtful notes to everyone who responded, boosting feedback and affinity at UMW.
ALUM rated the request a 10/10 “Following the STUDENT’s initial email inquiry, we scheduled a Zoom call, so I could provide answers to her questions based on my experience as an archivist. I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with a recent graduate from the Department of Historic Preservation. Although, I graduated from the same program 30 years ago, we instantly had a connection through our love of research and cultural heritage institutions. I hope she takes me up on my offer to continue our conversation as she pursues her career.”
Let’s find a time for Max & team to show you just how smart, simple, and scalable it can truly be for alumni and students to connect to one another for advice and support. We promise you’ll be inspired by how artificial intelligence can be a force for good.
