Career Advice

"What should I prioritize after graduation? Big firm, small firm, specific focus or job security?"

Big firm or small firm? Houston, Seattle, or somewhere else entirely? For one soon-to-graduate architecture student, the choices felt overwhelming and the clock was ticking as graduation and a semester in Paris approached. With so many possibilities on the table, it was hard to know where to begin. That’s where the magic of weak ties comes in. A single conversation with an alum can cut through the noise, offer perspective, and turn uncertainty into confidence about the next step forward.

Question

I’m graduating this May with my B.Arch, but since I’ll be in Paris this spring I know I may need to start my job search early. I’m torn about what I want after graduation. Should I work in Houston or somewhere else? Should I join a big firm or a small one, chase a specific focus or prioritize job security?

My preceptorship firm in Seattle has offered me a position, which is exciting, but I feel hesitant to go back because I wonder what other opportunities might be out there. At the same time, I really enjoyed my experience with them and they provide great support for the AREs.

I’d love to connect with alumni to hear how they made these kinds of decisions, how they started their careers, and how they approached getting licensed.

Response

Most architecture firms want you to start right away, so waiting until you return from Paris should be fine. If you feel anxious, taking the Seattle preceptorship job is a solid choice because you can always explore other opportunities later.

Do not underestimate your network. Every interview I got came through a friend, a professor, or another connection rather than just applying online. My own preceptorship firm did not extend an offer, and moving elsewhere turned out to be the best decision for me. I have been happy and continued learning at the same job for over eleven years.

Regarding firm size, small firms give you experience across all aspects of a project, while larger firms offer more resources, stability, and a variety of project types. Either can be a good fit, but the people you work with make the biggest difference. For exams, some take them right after graduation while others wait a few years to gain more context. I waited and found it very helpful, especially because my firm provided study resources that can otherwise be expensive.

The key takeaway is to not stress too much. Careers rarely follow a straight line, and even one connection or conversation can open doors you did not know existed.

Follow Up

Thank you for your thoughtful advice. It is reassuring to know that most firms want you to start right away, which means I can focus on my classes and building my network this semester instead of stressing about applications. I also agree that the people you work with make a big difference. I really enjoyed my coworkers during my preceptorship, which is a major reason I am considering returning. Thank you again for your guidance.
