Career Advice

"How can I gain experience and prepare for a barrister career without a law degree?"

This story shows how powerful alumni connections can be. Within just 24 hours, a student exploring the barrister route received two thoughtful replies, including detailed guidance from an alum practicing overseas. What stood out wasn’t just the quality of advice, but how much the alum valued giving back—sharing that staying connected with students after many years brought as much meaning to them as it did to the student. For schools, it’s a reminder that these exchanges strengthen both sides: students gain clarity and momentum, while alumni feel proud and re-engaged with their community.

Question

I am an undergraduate student currently on a year abroad, exploring pathways to becoming a barrister without having studied law at university. I would appreciate advice on whether it is possible to gain relevant legal experience, such as mini-pupillages, before committing to a law conversion course, and how to strengthen my profile in the meantime through transferable skills or activities like mooting.

Response

I think pursuing the barrister route is an exciting journey, but it’s important to get a sense of the profession before fully committing. I studied law in London, now practice as a barrister in Hong Kong, and also lecture part-time, including at the University of Law, so I am familiar with the GDL. My own background is in Chemistry, followed by an LLB and LLM, and I’ve seen how the GDL, while shorter, may be less comprehensive than a full law degree—something some chambers prefer. My advice is to apply broadly for mini-pupillages and also seek experience with law firms, as any related exposure will help you understand the field and confirm your commitment to it. Please feel free to reach out if further guidance would be useful.

Feedback

Its great to continue to be part of the LSE Community even after so many years away. This is not only great for students but for myself.
