Classroom

"If you had to do it over again, would you choose Walden or would you go elsewhere?"

At Protopia, we love seeing faculty bring alumni networking into the classroom through real-world informational interviews, because career success is everyone’s business (just like fundraising). And when alumni are invited to step in, the results can be transformational.

Education is a lifelong journey, and we’re especially passionate about championing non-traditional students: the working parents, caregivers, and adult learners who juggle it all while chasing their purpose. Alumni support doesn’t just propel careers, it reminds students they’re not alone and that their goals are worth celebrating.

The example below from a Walden University student and alum showcases what’s possible: a thoughtful question, an insightful response, and a reminder of the power of authentic engagement and career networking in the classroom. More institutions need to tap into their alumni communities to provide this kind of encouragement, wisdom, and connection. Because when alumni show up, learners thrive.

Question

I’m currently working toward my bachelor’s in social work at Walden, with a background in criminal justice and more than 10 years of experience in group homes for individuals with disabilities. As a full-time single mother and caregiver, I’m passionate about helping others, which is why I chose this field.

I’d love to connect with alumni for an informational interview to hear your honest reflections on Walden. Which courses best prepared you for the real world? What lessons or skills have you carried into your career? Were there classes that felt like busy work, or did each contribute meaningfully? Did you feel the instructors were knowledgeable and genuinely invested in your success? Looking back, would you choose Walden again, and what advice would you give yourself starting out? Finally, what did you learn on the job that you wish Walden had taught you?

Any insights or tips you’re willing to share would mean so much, and I’d be grateful for your candid perspective.

Response

My name is ALUM, and I earned my Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Educational Psychology at Walden University. The courses I completed thoroughly prepared me for the challenges ahead, and I continue to see their lasting impact on both my career and my life.

Each course contributed meaningfully to my professional development and personal growth, so I wouldn’t call any of them “busy work.” One lesson that has stayed with me came from a professor who used to say, “Education is not a sprint; it’s a slow and steady race.” I carry that perspective with me every day, and as a reminder I even bought sneakers in Walden’s signature green.

I picked up countless tips and strategies that I still use, especially around managing course materials and time effectively — skills that improved my productivity in both my professional and personal life. One of my most memorable moments was at my final residency during a LinkedIn Lounge session, where connecting with students from diverse backgrounds inspired me and gave me the confidence to complete the program.

I found my instructors to be genuine, knowledgeable, and invested in my success, bringing real-world expertise into the classroom. The education I received translated directly into my career, particularly in understanding different learning styles and creating inclusive educational experiences.

If I could give myself advice starting out, it would be to lead by example for my children: remember that this program is a steady journey, stay focused, remain patient, and enjoy the process. Looking back, I would absolutely choose Walden again. The supportive community, the encouragement from instructors, and the practical lessons I gained made all the difference.

When I started my first job after graduation, I quickly realized that learning doesn’t stop — just like the first day of class, the job came with new lessons, supported by peers and resources. My experience at Walden gave me the confidence and preparation to continue growing.

If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I would absolutely choose Walden University. In fact, I was first introduced to Walden by someone I met at a weekend conference. Their enthusiasm for the program and the university left a lasting impression on me and played a significant role in my decision to enroll.

I sincerely believe Walden will provide you with the support and guidance you need to achieve your goals, and I hope to see you walk across that stage to make your family proud.
