The Talent Landscape in University Advancement

Recruiting and retaining top talent has always been a challenge for university advancement leaders, but the COVID-19 years of 2020 and 2021 have been particularly tough to navigate. First, many colleges and universities froze salaries and put hiring on hold as uncertainty over enrollment and other environmental factors forced university leaders to proceed with caution and make hard choices when resourcing top priorities. Many colleges and universities reduced their advancement staff and had to leave open roles unfilled. 

Fast-forward to May 2022, we’re in the endemic phase with COVID-19, and the labor market has returned to full force. Advancement teams are hiring again, but now there are fewer applicants for roles that once attracted 2-3 times the number of candidates. In addition, fully remote, flexible, work-at-home roles are in demand, and university leaders are dealing with the challenge of creating new policies that will attract and retain top talent. 

Are roles in university advancement not as attractive as they once were? What can advancement leaders do to attract top engagement and development professionals and establish a talent pipeline in this unique environment?
