FSU STUDENT CURIOUS ABOUT COMBINING THEATRE AND PSYCHOLOGY

By MAX LEISTEN

Careers are never linear. There is no “one path” to follow but rather most of us have many different careers in our lives (being CEO of Protopia is probably #6 for me).

Which is why I love this story: a student looking for ways to combine her two passions of theatre and psychology to help people, and alumni both reaffirm the opportunity and advise her to not be overly analytical about it. Let your passions be your true north but be flexible in how they will materialize.

Keep it simple!

The "ask"

I am STUDENT, a freshman at Florida State University. I plan on double majoring in Social Work and Theatre.

I am very passionate about theatre and have done it for most of my life, but I don’t really want to do it as a full-time career. I am also very passionate about helping people, which is why I want to become a Clinical Social Worker. I was wondering if there was any way to combine these two passions.

Because I have done so much theatre in my life, I think I could use that to help people in a different way, but I don’t know how to do that or what that would entail. Is there a way to combine them?

Thank you so much for your help!

The "give" (1 of 3)

To be perfectly honest the Theatre program is very intense even for the BA program. Your schedule will be very full and performance viewings are mandatory for each semester. This is not to discourage, but to make aware that it’s not as easy as community theatre or Highschool theatre classes. I would talk to the advisor over the Theatre Dept in order to fully grasp what that scheduling will look like for you.

From the perspective of using in your eventual job; it’s a phenomenal experience. Theatre will help you work with all types of people and character/play analysis will aid you in the field of psychology. You will never find a more cohesive group that come together to make something as wonderful as theatre. You will learn to work with people you may not like, are bossy, and sometimes demeaning (depending on if you’re on stage or backstage), but you’ll also find people who are wonderful and kind.

You’ll find those types of personalities in every single experience working with people. This just gives a very up close and personal experience of that and it will be to your benefit if you focus on looking at it through a clinical lens. I have used more skills I learned from theatre in my work life than I ever thought I would and it looks great on a resume because of the higher standard the students are held to in order to stay within the major.

In conclusion, I have found the major to be VERY helpful in my career and have reaped value hand over fist when it comes to understanding people and adapting to view any situation from all sides before coming to a concise point about someone’s needs in a given circumstance. Critical thinking and facts will be your best ally no matter what you choose.

Best wishes!

The Outcome

Besides three amazing responses from alumni, here’s the AEM impact of the engagement:

Contacted Alumni: 30
Email Open Rate: 57%
Clickthrough Rate: 17%
Engagement Rate: 17%

Florida State has just officially launched FSU Connect and in crawl-walk-run fashion has not augment its data with philanthropic information (that’s forthcoming). Hence there are no fundraiser alerts for this engagement. But the AI did preferentially target alumni with “low engagement” to bring them back into the fold (mission accomplished!).
