FSU GRADUATE WANTS TO TRANSITION TO A FULL-TIME DIGITAL MEDIA CAREER

#engagementstory

By MAX LEISTEN

Making the jump from a temporary role to a full-time career can feel like a big step, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to explore what’s out there. With a background in social sciences and digital media production, there are so many paths to consider, from creating engaging content to working on projects that make an impact in policy or communications.

This combination opens doors to fulfilling careers with plenty of room for growth. Talking to people who’ve been through similar transitions can be super helpful—they can share tips on industries to look into, how to highlight your unique skills, and even how to approach the job search with confidence. That’s why we do what we do.

Keep it simple,

Max

The "ask"

I am a 2022 graduate of Florida State University’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. I am currently working as a residential advisor for an international program, but I am seeking advice on transitioning to a full-time career with benefits that offers more opportunities for growth and skill development. I am particularly interested in exploring career paths that leverage my additional degree in Digital Media Production.

I would greatly appreciate any insights you may have on finding a fulfilling and well-paying career that surpasses the current campus environment. I am eager to learn about your experiences and any advice you may have on navigating this transition.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

The "give"

Hey STUDENT, sounds like you have a similar background to mine, I graduated from FSU with dual degrees in IT and Political Science, a marriage of the social sciences and digital technology.

I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do at the time or had a plan for connecting the dots in the future, but I knew I loved both subjects. This led me to working for political campaigns and leaning on my digital expertise to ultimately carve out a niche for myself working in digital strategy efforts in politics. This happened naturally and wasn’t planned, I just kept on pursuing opportunities in things that I was naturally passionate about, and taking big leaps when opportunities arose (e.g. taking a semester off for an unpaid internship in Chicago, a city that I’ve never been to or even knew a single person in). Leaps led to connections which led to more opportunities, that all led me to where I am today at a big tech company.

Ultimately the best advice I can give is that you pursue your passions and do not be afraid of taking potentially big risks, especially early in your career.

In tech I work in product, which is pretty different from digital media production. I have no real experience there. But feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn if I can help be a resource further. Always happy to connect with a fellow ‘Nole.
