APP STATE STUDENT ASKS EXPERTS FOR MARKETING CAREER TIPS

#engagementstory

By MAX LEISTEN

Marketing isn’t just one job, it’s a hundred different paths wrapped into one career. It’s exciting, but can be overwhelming. Digital, brand, content, strategy, analytics… where do you even start?

This App State student knew they needed real advice from real marketers. So, they reached out through Ask a Mountaineer. In response, they got a real action plan, steps they could take right now! And even better? An open door to keep the conversation going. Because career growth isn’t about knowing all the answers, it’s about knowing who to ask.

Keep it simple,

Max

The "ask"

I am a graduating senior in 2026 from Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, majoring in Marketing.

I’m reaching out to you today to seek advice on how to stand out in the job market as a marketing student and how to be a successful marketer. I’m particularly interested in hearing about your experiences and any advice you wish you had when you were starting out.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

The "give"

I have had a wild ride of careers, and honestly I think it may be best to just have a meeting. But just in case you prefer this type of direct feedback…. Here’s what I recommend to stand out:

1. Work on a real marketing project NOW.

Find a local business or nonprofit and offer to help them with marketing initiatives, think website improvements, SEO, or basic email marketing. This hands-on experience will help you understand true business metrics, like conversion rates, customer acquisition costs, and ROI, beyond classroom theory. (not just social media pages, it may be “cool” but everyone has it on their resume)

2. Focus on business results.

Businesses value marketers who understand the bigger picture. Learn how to analyze Google Analytics, search engine performance, and customer data to show how marketing directly impacts revenue.

3. Give more than you take

Showing that you’re willing to learn and help without financial gain speaks volumes. Plus, it gives you a low-risk way to experiment, learn, and make mistakes without pressure. (help these mom and pops for free)

4. Create a one-page case study.

Once you’ve completed a project, put together a one-page summary with charts and data that clearly explain your results in a way that non-marketing professionals can understand. When applying for jobs, attach this document if there’s room for additional materials. It shows initiative, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas simply.

5. Get certified now.

Google offers free certifications in Google Analytics, Ads, and more. They’re easy to obtain and will give you an edge by proving you understand key digital tools that employers value. (also SEM Rush, such good stuff)

Let’s chat man!

The feedback

This was a ton of fun to share my experience with the next generation of App grads. He had great questions and honestly some that I should have asked when I was a year away from graduation. It was well worth the small investment of time and I hope it helps set this individual up for a great start to a long career.
