The "ask"

Hi, I hope you are doing well,  I’ll hopefully attend the university there as a freshman next school year.

I live in Miami, Florida and I have never dealt with cold weather. What do you recommend me to buy or take there?

Also, how is your life on campus?

Thank you for your guidance!

The "give" (1 of 4)

Hi! Thanks for reaching out! Just a little intro for myself, I am a junior nursing student! I’m involved in a few clubs and organizations on campus including […]. But more on the weather…

Boone weather is certainly different than Miami, but here’s some things that I think are really helpful to prepare for all of the different types of weather in Boone:

– good winter coat (I have a long puffer coat that comes to mid-thigh that is so helpful)
– good mittens/gloves
– beanie(s)/ear warmers
– Waterproof shoes (HUGE!!)
– Hiking/winter boots (any shoes that have good traction will do)
– Good raincoat
– Backpack rain cover (not essential, but it helpful to have)
– Umbrella
– Fleece lined leggings
– Wool socks

One thing that I wish I knew before coming to App/Boone was how bad the wind was. Being at the top of the mountain we get really strong wind, which can make 40º weather feel like it’s 20º.

I have had a great experience on campus since being a freshman. I have joined many clubs and organizations that have made my college experience memorable.

I highly recommend trying out clubs and organizations that sound interesting to you; it’s a great way to meet people and make friends!

There is always so much going on on campus, and I encourage you to check out our event database, Engage: engage.appstate.edu

I am happy to answer any more questions you have!

Don’t hesitate to reach out or pass this along to friends!
