ROANOKE STUDENT INTERESTED IN THE CORPORATE EVENTS FIELD

By MAX LEISTEN

Most questions from alumni and students are career-related because there is no (and never will be) better resource (and support network) available to them. Here’s another great example with an amazing response from the Roanoke community.

Keep it simple!

The "ask"

I am a Business Administration student looking for a career in the events field. I am the current manager of the Campus Activities Board, and I have completed two internships during my time at Roanoke College. My internship is assisting in planning the presidential inauguration for President Shushok, and my second is interning at Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center.

What advice do you have for a new graduate entering an experience-driven workforce with only three years of event experience? How can I find a job that will satisfy my wants and still be able to support me? I am concerned that I do not have enough certifications or experience to enter the corporate event planning world and I am unsure where to find a job in that field.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Thank you.

The "give" (1 of 5)

Hi STUDENT! I love to hear that you are looking for an events role/career. Since you will just be entering the workforce, I wouldn’t worry too much about your experience. There are lots of entry-level/junior event roles available. Often, those are labeled as “event coordinators” in job postings. After you have a job, see what certifications, such as CMP (the most common, but there are many others), your company will sponsor you to complete. These can easily be added to your professional development or goals plans, which helps your company pay for them.

Additionally, since you already have three years of experience, highlight that in your resume, cover letter, and during interviews! Even with the three years, you will likely start at entry-level, but don’t let that discourage you. Show your skills once you have the job and can move up quickly.

Lastly, I would start thinking about what types of events you want to focus on; this can help narrow down jobs, and if you start in a particular events field, you can build relationships early on and utilize those for future employment and mentorship opportunities.

I hope this helps!
