DUKE MED SCHOOL GRADUATE TRANSITIONING TO PHARMA

By MAX LEISTEN

Not so much a transition journey, but support for what can be considered a non-traditional career for a medical school graduate. And Duke Blue Devils alumni did not disappoint — in fact, probably too much of a good thing.

  • Contacted Alumni: 35
  • Email Open Rate: 60%
  • Volunteers: 11 (yes, 11 responses)
  • Updated Alumni Employment Data: 6
  • Feedback 10/10

Amazing to see over 60% of alumni who opened the request offered help. And the student followed up with each one of them — after all, it’s not so much about the response but the opportunity to grow your professional network.

Keep it simple!

The "ask"

Hi, I’m a recent Duke med grad, currently in residency, and interested in a career in pharma. I’ll have my medical license at the end of this academic year and am interested in making the switch this summer. I’ve updated my resume and spoken with many people already in the field about making the transition, but I am trying to broaden my search as much as possible for helpful tips on successfully landing my first job in the industry.

I’m looking for help or advice on how to get my first job as a licensed physician in medical affairs in the pharma industry. I’ve been applying online and have had an interview, but I understand the market is very competitive, so I am interested in any suggestions about how to hone my application or additional networking strategies to increase the hit rate and yield on my job application process.

Thank you so much for your help. I appreciate the time you take to read my question and any suggestions you can offer!

The "give" (1 of 11)

Hi! I would be happy to chat by Zoom or Teams if you are interested in considering other than straight-to-pharma transitions.

I finished my training in oncology at Duke in 2005 and then took a position leading a medical countermeasures development program for the US government (about which, at the time, I sometimes wondered what on earth I was doing).

This has led to an extremely rewarding career in public health preparedness, where I now lead an organization called the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations that supports vaccine development against epidemic and pandemic diseases (cepi.net).

If you’d like to set up a call please reach out!

Best regards
